ArchiCAD Training –  (Quick Start Course – 1-1)

QuickStart 2018

[su_youtube_advanced url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3w3LixDTe4″ rel=”no” modestbranding=”yes” https=”yes”]

This is the first video in the updated version of the QuickStart Course, created in May 2018. More videos will be created as I rework the full course to use the latest versions of ARCHICAD. Unfortunately I do not have a timeline for this project, and it has now been a full year since this video was produced.

QuickStart Classic

This introductory 23 minute video gives an overview of the QuickStart Course, then presents a tour of the ArchiCAD interface and working tools.

NOTE: This introductory video, shot before the course was created, shows my original plan with 6 modules. As I developed the actual lessons, the outline was adjusted and expanded, and the actual QuickStart Course has 7 modules. Please refer to the left-hand sidebar or the Course Outline page for the final version.

    Hello Eric
Is there exercise files (samples projects etc) for the courses and where can I download them?
    Thanks
    Maria

Maria – There are exercise files provided as PDF references starting in Module 3. In Modules 1 and 2, it’s all about learning the concepts as I demonstrate how things work. In Modules 3 through 7 you’ll build your own project (in whatever version of ARCHICAD you have) based on the PDF drawings. I don’t provide ARCHICAD project files in this course, since people are working in different versions of ARCHICAD as well as different base templates; I focus on principles that can be applied regardless of version.
The sample project I demonstrate is available as part of MasterTemplate, which you can purchase at https://actemplate.com – available for all versions of ARCHICAD from 10 through 22 (with 23 about to be released this week) in both USA and INT (metric) variations.

      Hello Eric –
I just tried the download and it worked fine for me, so perhaps it was a temporary internet issue. Also, please make sure you are right-clicking the DOWNLOAD button (rather than simply clicking the button) and choosing Save As (or Save Linked File As or Save Target File As or similar; this varies depending on which browser you are using) to save the video file to your computer.

Hi from Italy, Eric! I’m a 42 yo civil engineer and AutoCAD user for many years (maybe you remember that DOS release with Columbia sample color – EGA – drawing, 2.4?)..
In Italy all public administrations speak “DWG” language but I’m seriously convinced that if you become a master on Archicad you can save a lot of hours and you can produce, alone, what requires 4 or 5 AutoCAD designers.. So, I decided to make all our money (spent for Archicad licences) productive by NOW!
I don’t start from zero, but I’m a self-taught person, and, like a tennis player, I need the correct setup from a teacher.. I know exactly what I want but I don’t know what is the most correct way to do it.
My best ambition is to rich a skill level enough to produce this project (some independent buildings that we have built near Rome) and render it WITHOUT passing through 3DS Max (working twice..):

    http://apcommunication.s3.amazonaws.com/archicad/render1.jpg
    http://apcommunication.s3.amazonaws.com/archicad/render2.jpg
    http://apcommunication.s3.amazonaws.com/archicad/render3.jpg

I know, it’s a very ambitious aim, but if you don’t look very far your results will be very weak 🙂
Bye and pardon for my “italian-english” 🙂

    Bye!
    Alessio

P.S. As I suggested on your Youtube Video, it could be very useful if you add subtitles on your video (for the rest of non american audience)..

      Chan –
You may right-click on the blue DOWNLOAD button at the bottom right of the video player, and choose Save Target File As or Save Link As or a similar command (it varies by browser). That will allow you to download the video file to your computer.

    Aloha Eric,
The Quick Options Palette in your video has more options than the one in my ArchiCAD. Where are the settings to control what options are offered in the Quick Options Palette?
I couldn’t quite make out all of the options that you have in your Quick Options Palette. What options do you have in your Quick Options Palette?
    Mahalo,
    John

      Aloha Eric,
Please let me know when you have a moment to answer this question.
I see that you have answered other questions that I asked after asking this question. Perhaps you missed it.
Is there some setting on your website that can notify me when you reply to a question? This would be a great feature so I don’t have to go back through all of the lessons to see if my questions have been answered.
      Thank you,
      John

        John –

The Quick Options palette has added more popups with the last few ArchiCAD versions. The ones in ArchiCAD 14 or 15 have more controls than what you have in ArchiCAD 11 (or whatever version you have). There is no way to control this by the user, other than making sure this palette is expanded large enough to see all that is available.

I don’t know if there is a way to get notified when I make a reply. I know that I get notified when a comment is posted, but I haven’t seen where this is controlled. If/when I figure this out I’ll let you know. Sorry.

        Eric

    Aloha Eric,
I learned a few things from this video that were nice surprises. I’ve been using ArchiCAD since version 7 and there were tips in this first video showing features that I didn’t know about.
    Thanks,
    John

      Alkis –
Try right-clicking on the Download button and choosing Save Target As or Save Linked File As. This should allow you to save the file to somewhere on your computer rather than opening it up in another browser window.

    Hi Eric,

I’ve rarely used the navigator preview, thanks for going over it again. Reviewing the Quick Start lessons helped me pick up things I hadn’t really gotten the first time around. I’ll note the things I’ve learned from them in the comments area.

    Thanks,

    Mariya

Eric, am I correct in that:

a.) only the the introduction to the QuickStart course 1-1 has been posted; and that

b.) the download button only allows the video to be downloaded and seen in the real time while watching it, but does not actually download to the subscriber’s computer as with the downloads for the 7 Keys?

I am also thinking about purchasinng the videos as I may be in areas without internet connection. Will the QuickStart course material be part of that video subscription?

And last do the current subscribers receive the free copy of My Speed?

Great job last night. I enjoyed the refrigerator analogy you referenced. I certainly feel that way. Sat in on the ArchiCAD 15 webinar earlier yesterday. With that I feel like it may be two refrigerators, but thanks to you I am building confidence to start dancing.

      Ken –

a.) I have posted all of QuickStart Course module 1 (parts 1 through 5, totaling about 90 minutes) and most of module 2 (parts 1 through 4, with 5 still to come – a total of 80 minutes so far). Look in the sidebar or the navigation menu and you’ll see them listed. If you don’t see them shown, please refresh your browser – you may have to empty your cache if it still only shows one item.

      b) If you find that clicking the Download button opens up the video in a new window but doesn’t actually download the video, then you’ll need to right-click and choose Save Target As or Save Linked File As or a similar command. You should be able to download it to your computer for offline viewing.

You may purchase a DVD set from the navigation menu Extras > Get the Course on DVD. I will include the QuickStart Course in the DVD set – it wasn’t originally in the mix, but I’ve decided to add in that seventh DVD.

Thanks for the positive words about the webinar presentation. I’m sorry, but I won’t be giving away the free copy of MySpeed to current subscribers – it’s a promotional offer to give people a little extra reason to sign up now. It’s only $30, so it’s not a big deal – I recommend it very highly. You can download a free trial by using my link on the Extras > Enounce MySpeed page.
